Fado Tradicional

2010 · Parlophone Music Portugal

2010 was the year of a very special recording project, the album Fado Tradicional, in which she would reaffirm her connection with the most authentic tradition of classical Fado by going back to some of the most representative composers in the history of the genre, such as Alfredo Marceneiro, albeit with a highly individual and contemporary approach. In the same year she was made a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et Lettres by the French Government.

    Lyrics

    Fado Vianinha

    (Francisco Viana)

Go slowly if you want to go far
And I truly do go slowly
    Let’s see if I don’t get lost
On the byways of the road.

    Do not hurry, my love
Because you don’t have to wait
    Everything that begins
Sooner or later has to end

In the meantime all has changed
Just see what little sense it makes
I laugh when I think of your tears
I weep when I think of your laughter

Give me the depths of your eyes
    And the world can end
What does it matter to the world
If there are worlds there in your look

    Lyrics

    Promete, Jura - Fado Sérgio

(Maria João Dâmaso / Sérgio Dâmaso)

You’re thinking of me, promise, swear
If like me you feel in the sobbing of the wind
    Truths more certain, more impure
That our lips have to tell

If you feel the trembling rain out there
As the unleashing of an adventure
That may or may not endure for life
Say you feel like me, promise, swear

If you feel this fire that burns you
If you feel my body storming
Fight for me my love, risk, fear
Embrace this desire that invades me

If you feel my love, that what I have not said
Is, above all, more than what you said
And in not one line of which I felt anything
Of what I gave to you and you to me

    Lyrics

As Meninas Dos Meus Olhos - Fado Alfacinha

(Fernando Pinto Ribeiro / Jaime Santos)

    The girls of my eyes
Never have I had my hand in theirs
    They fled to your eyes
    Please let me see them.

    The girls of my eyes
Whether they’ll be lost I do not know
Let me see if your eyes
Care for them and keep them well.

    The girls of my eyes
    In order to encounter them
They went to ask your eyes
To speak when you are silent.

    The girls of my eyes
I no longer know where they are
Let me see in your eyes
If you keep them in your heart.

    * Translator’s note: the title of this song is untranslatable as it is an equivalent to the English expression “The apple of my eyes”.

    Lyrics

Mais Uma Lua - Fado Varela

    (Diogo Clemente / Reinaldo Varela)

Here, close to us, absent to me
The power of what we were and of being yours
    Here I slept, heavily,
As into me fell another moon.

My sorrows were there as always
Or was it the solitude of one who’s held
In the wish to know us, pleasant times
And all my soul does not understand.

And here what was ours is dying.
Of love the sorrows speak almost ended.
Pardon me ,my love, if I don’t hold you
But live perfectly well within myself.

    Dona Rosa - Fado Bailarico
    2:15
    Lyrics

    Dona Rosa - Fado Bailarico

    (Fernando Pessoa / Alfredo Marceneiro)

    Dona Rosa, Dona Rosa
When you were still a bud
    They said something to you
About the flower without a heart

    The rose that’s unpicked
    Has no less life
There’s no one who sees you
Who doesn’t want to pick you

    Whoever made you so lovely
    Didn’t make you to show
    That you are lovelier still,
When you know how to deny it

    Dona Rosa, Dona Rosa
    Which rose-bush are you from?
One that has nothing but thorns
For those who only wish you well

    Dona Rosa, Dona Rosa,
    Which rose-bush are you from?

    Lyrics

Ai Esta Pena De Mim - Fado Zé António

(Amália Rodrigues / José António Guimarães Serôdio)

    Oh, this endless anguish
    Oh, this heart of mine
    Oh, this pain of mine
    Oh, my solitude

    Oh my miserable childhood
Oh my love that never was
    Oh, my lost life
    Oh, this clarity pains me!

    Oh, this great anxiety
    Oh this lack of peace
    Oh past with no yearning
    Oh my lack of belonging

    Oh poor me, living on
    In my great despair
Oh, all that I do not understand
Oh, what I do understand and do not want.

Na Rua Do Silêncio - Fado Alexandrino
    2:48
    Lyrics

Na Rua Do Silêncio - Fado Alexandrino

(António Sousa Freitas / Joaquim Campos)

    In the street of silence
    All is more absent,
    Even the moonlight flees
    And even life is weeping.
There are no declarations of love,
    There’s no-one who misses us
And when the sun breaks through
    It lies there broken

    In the street of silence
    The fado is more sombre
Nor do the shadows of a flower
    Fall there
    The street has a destination
    And its destination is cold
    With no meaning
    No-one passes there.

    In the street of silence
    The doors are closed
    And even dreams fall,
    Faithless and without tenderness.
    In the street of silence
    There are weary tears,
    In the street of silence
    It is always darkest night.

    Lyrics

Rosa Da Madragoa - Fado Seixal

(Frederico de Brito / José Duarte)

    The rose of Madragoa
Filling her basket in the market
Out in the street her cries
    Awaken half of Lisbon
Which smiles as she passes by

    Merrily she ascends the steps
With a joy she spreads around her
    Her bright skirt a-dancing
The cross of life weighing light upon her
    Her basket weighing more

    If through the corner shadows
    Her voice resounds
    Other market women know
When she passes through the alleyways
    The rose of Madragoa

    Lyrics

Boa Noite Solidão - Fado Carlos Da Maia

    (Jorge Fernando)

    Good evening, solitude
I saw enter by the window
    Your body of darkness
I want to give you my hand
Like the flame of a candle
Give hand to the dark night.

    Your fingers, solitude,
    Undoes the yearning
    That takes its place,
You spread my yearnings on the ground
    And against my will
Remind me how it is to live with it.

    Only you know, solitude,
    The anguish that brings pain
When I turn my back on love.
    Like someone losing their mind,
    We drown in our love
In the pride that blinds us .

With my heart in my hand
    I shall ask you, frankly,
To speak no more of her.
    Good night, solitude,
    Now I want to sleep
Because I shall dream of her.

    Desalma - Fado Alberto
    2:30
    Lyrics

    Desalma - Fado Alberto

    (Diogo Clemente / Miguel Ramos)

I lost my soul today at your hands,
That I might know how to give her love
    Like I gave you
That I might give her the kisses,
    Perfect lips
Of one who kissed for love and knew it.

Perhaps will not slip between my fingers
The soul, like a boat that draws away
If the fragile condition of so many fears
Allows me to have enough of you

And the boat launched on the knowing sea
    Through fears and fatigues
    I had lost myself
I’ll wait a lifetime to see you
And the life that is only mine still awaits.

Meus Olhos Que Por Alguém - Fado Menor Do Porto

(António Botto / José Joaquim Cavalheiro Jr.)

    My eyes that for someone
    Shed tears without end
    No longer cry for anyone
It’s enough that they cry for me

    With repentance and looking
    At life as it is
    My eyes are conquering
    More fatigue and less faith

    Always filled with bitterness
But if life is truly like this
For someone to weep, what madness
It’s enough to cry for me

Olhos Da Cor Do Mar (Fado Amora)
    Lyrics

Olhos Da Cor Do Mar (Fado Amora)

(João Ferreira-Rosa e Óscar Alves / Joaquim Campos)

    Your green eyes are seas
That the moon has been courting
    They’re yearnings, they’re singing
    They’re sad eyes weeping

    They’re the waves’ thoughts
    That your look left me
    They’re dead stars’ laments
That your sea tore to bits

My boat I want to take
    To the farthest horizon
To see your eyes in the moonlight
And to live in them openly

The wind passes over the reefs
    Like your sad singing
In the green sea of your eyes
    I am always shipwrecked

Lavava No Rio, Lavava (Fado Lavava No Rio, Lavava)
    Lyrics

Lavava No Rio, Lavava (Fado Lavava No Rio, Lavava)

    (Amália Rodrigues / Fontes Rocha)

I was washing in the river, washing
I was freezing in the cold, freezing
When I was going to the river to wash
    I was feeling hungry, feeling
    I was weeping, also weeping
When I saw my mother weep

    I was singing, also singing
    I was dreaming, also dreaming
    And in my fantasy
    Were things so fantastic
That I forgot that I was crying
That I forgot that I was suffering

I no longer go to the river to wash
    But I continue to dream
I no longer dream what I used to dream
If I no longer wash in the river
    Because this cold freezes me
More than it used to freeze me then

    Oh, my mother, my mother
What a yearning I have for that blessing
And the bad that I used to know
Of that hunger I used to feel
Of the cold that used to freeze me
    And of my fantasy

Now we feel no hunger, mother
    But nor do we have
The desire of not feeling it
We no longer know how to dream
    We go along deceiving
    The desire to die
